Residence Archives

Since its opening, MAC VAL has initiated a varied and rich residency program to complement the museum projects – establishing relationships between diverse art-scenes and an audience curious to discover contemporary creation, and fostering the production of artworks rooted in the territory.
The department of Val-de-Marne -one of the two departments with the Seine-Saint-Denis to build a contemporary art collection- regularly enrich its fund with new artworks produced on its territory by artists from all around the world. Some residencies are purposely organized to coincide with cultural events set by the Ministry of Culture, like “100% Finland” in 2008 for example.

Being in residence implies both settling down in one place, moving around as well as changing and enriching one’s point of view. In continuous contact with the museum teams, artworks and visitors, the artists-in-residence live in the museum in order to undertake a specific work resonating with the region. Their stays can vary from several weeks to several months, with some back and forth in between…

All residency programs imply to spend time in the region, regardless of whether the artist chooses to extend his/her work perimeter outside the museum, to create in or outdoor, or to meet local inhabitants.

This way, MAC VAL, a beacon of contemporary creation, provides both visitors and artists a unique opportunity. The program started in 2007 with the Indian artist Shilpa Gupta and has continued ever since with 10 international artists we invite you to discover on this page.
